Volkswagen used the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas as the perfect opportunity to show off their latest innovation in vehicle technology: gesture control.

Introduced on the Golf R Touch concept car at last year’s show, the new infotainment and vehicle control system is production ready on the upcoming e-Golf Touch. The e-Golf Touch will uses the latest version of VW MIB with a 9.2” high-resolution display. Though Volkswagen’s current system uses a proximity sensor to know when users are about to select a function on the screen, the new gesture control will take it a step farther. Simple intuitive gestures, like a wave or swiping motion will let the e-Golf Touch’s system know that you would like to move on to the next song on your playlist, for example.

The infotainment system will also feature configurable “tiles” with ten assignable functions on the touch screen, four touch-sensitive buttons, and will be compatible with smartphone platforms including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

Other innovations will include a save-to-Cloud function for infotainment settings, and improved voice control that can be turned on with the spoken command, “Hello Volkswagen,” rather than needing to press a button.

We are excited about the coming innovations, including gesture control, coming to Volkswagen in the coming years. But for now we enjoy exploring the many functions of technology like Volkswagen App-Connect found on models like the 2016 Jetta and Passat.
