If Volkswagen has their way, drivers will never need to choose between a race car-inspired driving experience and the fuel economy of a hybrid. Volkswagen’s Golf GTE Sport concept car debuted recently at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, showing off a combination of a sports car’s drivetrain, suspension, and body and a plug-in hybrid’s zero-emission capabilities.

A 1.6L TSI engine works with two electric motors to generate 494 lb.-ft. of torque and 395 HP. The VW GTE Sport concept is capable of sprinting 0 to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds. What’s even more impressive is its fuel economy of 118 mpg.

The highly unique exterior shows how future Volkswagen Golf models could develop. An hourglass shape promotes aerodynamic downforce and cooling for the rear brakes, while the rear achieves a powerful wide stance complete with double C-pillars.

The Volkswagen Golf GTE concept model features racing-style bucket seats and a motorsport-inspired steering wheel complete with paddle shifters. Three drive modes can be selected from a switch on the roof: “E-Mode,” “GTE-Mode,” or “Hybrid-Mode.”

While drivers in and around Fayetteville, NC may be eager to get behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport plug-in hybrid, sadly the model is still in its conceptual stage.
