What Happens During Routine Transmission Service?

Your Volkswagen has an excellent and very efficient transmission. Even a Volkswagen transmission, however, requires regular maintenance and servicing to keep it working efficiently. As your VW dealer, we’d like to tell you more about what happens when you come in for a transmission service.

When Do You Need a Service?

Your VW transmission will need a service somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. The exact schedule for your model is listed in your car manual. This book contains all the information about your regular service schedule. Your transmission is a highly complex piece of engineering, and it requires special attention to keep it operating perfectly.

What We Do During a Service

A service for your transmission involves checking and replacing three main components of the transmission.

Transmission Pan and Gasket Check

The transmission pan covers the bottom of your transmission. One of its functions is to protect the transmission against damage from stones and other debris that can be thrown up from the road surface. The pan provides cooling for the hot transmission fluid as it passes through the system. A magnet in the pan captures any metallic pieces picked up by the transmission fluid.

The gasket provides an air-tight seal between the contents of your transmission and the outside. This seal helps maintain the high-pressure system in your transmission and prevents fluid from leaking. We automatically check and replace the gasket during the service to ensure the transmission pan is completely sealed.

Replace Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid provides a wide variety of benefits to your transmission. It lubricates the various transmission components and protects them from friction damage. The fluid is pumped through the transmission and reduces the heat generated by the hundreds of constantly moving transmission components. Transmission fluid also provides hydraulic power that allows your gears to shift easily.

The fluid, however, needs to be replaced regularly. In time, the fluid becomes more sluggish due to the minute metallic fragments and other debris it absorbs in the transmission. The heat gradually reduces the viscosity of the fluid, and older fluid becomes susceptible to overheating. Old fluid can even start to burn, which makes shifting gears far more difficult.

Replace Transmission Filter

Your transmission has a filter, and its job is to filter out any debris accumulated by the transmission fluid. Each time the fluid circulates through your transmission, it passes through this filter. The filter traps and removes large particles in the fluid. This allows the fluid to work more efficiently. The filter, however, will get blocked and needs to be replaced.

Regular servicing improves the condition and longevity of your transmission. Book your service today at Valley Auto World Volkswagen.
