Fayetteville, NC was the capital of North Carolina till 1793. The capital moved to Raleigh, but our 239-year-old city has seen and been part of a lot of history. It’s important to remember the past and preserve it as much as possible for future generations to study. These are some of the numerous historical attractions in and around our beautiful city.

Market House

This grand old building was built in 1838 on the side of the original state house. It’s a two-story brick building with a five-arch arcade first floor and a large meeting room on the second floor. It’s named for its original function as Fayetteville’s town marketplace and remained a market until 1907.

The second-floor meeting area now houses the Market House Museum. Although small, this museum has a wealth of information on early Fayetteville and the building itself. They also feature a rotating series of exhibits from the building’s history. Market House is easy to find as it’s in the center of Market Square.

1897 Poe House

Some people confuse this house with the home of the famous writer Edgar Allan Poe. The home was built for a prominent local businessman with the same name. It’s a beautiful two-story, three-bay frame house, filled with furniture, decorations, and all the trappings of a well-to-do family from the early 20th century.

The building’s owner specified that he wanted all the modern conveniences, and the house has connections for electricity, gas, and heating. Strangely, it has no plumbing system. As you walk through the many rooms of this fine house and marvel at the architecture and decorations, you feel transported back to a simpler and quieter age. The Poe House is located at 206 Bradford Avenue.

Airborne & Special Operations Museum

Fayetteville has a strong and close connection to the military. This amazing museum opened in 2000 and illustrates the history and role of the US airborne and special operations forces. The tableaus and dioramas trace the history of airborne operations from the 1940s to the present day.

Separate sections of the museum are devoted to weapons, equipment, and tactics. The museum also highlights the bravery and skill of the US military and their sacrifices. It’s located at 100 Bragg Boulevard.
